What to Know About Teen Sexual Development and S.S.R.I.s

By Eric November 14, 2025

In recent discussions surrounding mental health and medication, a significant gap has emerged in research regarding the effects of antidepressants on emerging sexuality. While antidepressants are widely prescribed to treat depression and anxiety, their impact on sexual development and expression, particularly in young adults and adolescents, remains largely unexplored. This lack of research is particularly concerning given that sexual identity and orientation are crucial aspects of personal development during formative years. The absence of comprehensive studies means that individuals navigating their sexual identities may not fully understand how these medications could influence their experiences.

Current knowledge indicates that antidepressants can lead to various side effects, including changes in libido, sexual function, and overall sexual satisfaction. For instance, selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), a common class of antidepressants, are known to cause sexual dysfunction in some patients. This can include difficulties in achieving orgasm, erectile dysfunction, or diminished sexual desire. However, the specific effects of these medications on adolescents who are still exploring their sexual identities are not well-documented. This gap in research is particularly alarming as young people may already face challenges in understanding their sexuality, and the introduction of antidepressants could further complicate their experiences.

Moreover, the implications of this knowledge gap extend beyond individual experiences. As mental health awareness rises and more young people seek help for depression and anxiety, healthcare providers must be equipped with information on how these medications might affect their patients’ sexual development. Without this understanding, there is a risk of misinformed prescribing practices that could inadvertently hinder a young person’s journey toward a healthy sexual identity. Therefore, it is crucial for researchers to prioritize studies that examine the intersection of antidepressant use and emerging sexuality, ensuring that future generations have access to the comprehensive care they need during critical periods of their lives.

There is basically no research that looks at the impact of antidepressants on emerging sexuality. Here are the key things we do know.
