Waiting list down as NHS ‘approaches its limit’ ahead of strikes and flu

By Eric November 14, 2025

In a notable development for the National Health Service (NHS), the waiting list for treatments has decreased significantly, dropping to 7.39 million in September, which is approximately 230,000 fewer than the same time last year. This reduction is a positive sign amidst ongoing pressures within the healthcare system, as the NHS grapples with record demand for accident and emergency (A&E) services and ambulance responses as winter approaches. The decline in waiting lists, which represents around 6.24 million patients, is a result of concerted efforts by NHS staff to address backlog issues that had been exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic. In September alone, the waiting list saw a decrease of 15,845 compared to August, highlighting a gradual but steady improvement in the efficiency of patient care.

Despite this encouraging news regarding waiting times, the NHS is facing significant challenges as it prepares for the winter months, traditionally a peak period for health services. Hospital emergency departments are experiencing unprecedented demand, with many facilities nearing capacity. The pressures are compounded by staff shortages and rising patient numbers, particularly among those with respiratory conditions and other winter-related illnesses. NHS leaders have warned that while the reduction in waiting lists is a positive development, the overall system is still under strain, and the upcoming winter season could test the limits of healthcare resources. For instance, hospitals are bracing for surges in patients, which could impact the ability to maintain lower waiting lists and provide timely care to those in need.

As the NHS continues to navigate these complexities, it remains crucial for the public to be aware of their local health services and to utilize them responsibly. The ongoing efforts to reduce waiting times reflect the dedication of healthcare professionals, but the looming challenges of winter demand underscore the need for continued support and resources for the NHS. The government and healthcare authorities are urged to prioritize funding and staffing solutions to ensure that the health service can meet the needs of the population effectively during this critical period.

The NHS waiting list is 230,000 lower than July last year, even as the health service ‘approaches its limit’ with A&E and ambulances facing record demand ahead of winter. The overall waiting list for September was 7.39 million (an estimated 6.24 million patients) down 15,845 compared to the previous month and 230,000 fewer than July […]
