Fox News Politics Newsletter: Party rebels speak on government shutdown end
In the latest developments from Capitol Hill, the political landscape has been tumultuous, particularly following the recent government shutdown, which was the longest in U.S. history. The Justice Department made headlines by withdrawing its appeal regarding the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) from the Supreme Court, allowing funding to resume and alleviating concerns for many low-income families. Meanwhile, six House Democrats took a bold stand by breaking ranks with their party to vote in favor of a bipartisan bill that ultimately ended the shutdown. This legislation passed with a narrow margin of 222 to 209, supported by a coalition of Democrats and almost all Republicans, and was promptly signed into law by President Donald Trump late Wednesday night.
Among the dissenting Democrats, Rep. Marie Gluesenkamp Perez from Washington expressed her frustration with the political process, stating, “The last several weeks have been a case study in why most Americans can’t stand Congress.” Her comments reflect a growing discontent among constituents who feel that partisan politics often overshadow the urgent needs of the public. The six Democrats, which also included Reps. Jared Golden, Adam Gray, Don Davis, Henry Cuellar, and Tom Suozzi, emphasized the necessity of collaboration in solving pressing national issues rather than engaging in divisive political games. This sentiment resonates with many Americans who rely on government assistance programs like SNAP, as they cannot afford to be pawns in political maneuvering.
In addition to the shutdown developments, California Governor Gavin Newsom has vowed to block Trump’s reported energy plan, a move that has sparked debate among experts regarding its potential impact on the state’s energy policies. This ongoing tug-of-war between state and federal governance underscores the complexities of political leadership in today’s divided climate. As Congress grapples with internal conflicts, including a growing rift among Democrats over strategic approaches to elections and governance, the focus remains on how these dynamics will shape future legislation and the political landscape as a whole. With issues ranging from health care to economic stability at stake, the actions taken by lawmakers in the coming weeks will be crucial in determining the direction of the nation.

The six House Democrats who broke ranks with party leadership by voting in favor of legislation that ended the
government shutdown
are now opening up about their actions, with one saying, “The last several weeks have been a case study in why most Americans can’t stand Congress.”
Reps. Marie Gluesenkamp Perez of Washington, Jared Golden of Maine, Adam Gray of California, Don Davis of North Carolina, Henry Cuellar of Texas and Tom Suozzi of New York were the six who voted with all but two Republicans to pass the bill by a 222 to 209 margin. President
Donald Trump
then signed the legislation late Wednesday night, putting an end to the longest shutdown in U.S. history.
“Americans can’t afford for their Representatives to get so caught up in landing a partisan win that they abandon their obligation to come together to solve the urgent problems that our nation faces,” Gluesenkamp Perez
wrote on X.
“The last several weeks have been a case study in why most Americans can’t stand Congress. None of my friends who rely on SNAP would want to trade their dinner for an ambiguous D.C. beltway ‘messaging victory,’ and I’m glad this ugly scene is in the rearview mirror.”…
