The four astronauts NASA picked for the first crewed moon mission in 50 years

By Eric November 13, 2025

On Monday, NASA unveiled the astronauts who will lead the Artemis II mission, marking the first crewed lunar expedition in nearly fifty years. This mission is a monumental step in America’s return to the Moon, following the Apollo program that last sent astronauts to the lunar surface in 1972. The Artemis II mission is set for launch in November 2024 and will serve as a critical precursor to future lunar landings and the establishment of a sustainable human presence on the Moon. The selected crew includes experienced astronauts who bring a wealth of knowledge and expertise, each chosen for their unique skills and backgrounds that will contribute to the mission’s success.

The Artemis II crew comprises four astronauts: Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, Christina Koch, and Jeremy Hansen. Wiseman, a former Navy pilot and veteran of the International Space Station, will serve as the mission commander. Glover, who made history as the first African American to live and work on the ISS for an extended mission, will be the pilot. Christina Koch, renowned for her record-breaking 328-day spaceflight, will take on the role of mission specialist, while Jeremy Hansen, the first Canadian to be part of a lunar mission, rounds out the team as a mission specialist as well. This diverse crew reflects NASA’s commitment to inclusivity and representation in space exploration, embodying the spirit of collaboration that is essential for the success of future missions.

The Artemis II mission will not land on the Moon but will conduct a lunar flyby, providing critical data and experience for subsequent missions that aim to return humans to the lunar surface. This mission is part of NASA’s broader Artemis program, which seeks to establish a sustainable presence on the Moon by the end of the decade and prepare for future crewed missions to Mars. With the Artemis program, NASA aims to inspire a new generation of explorers and foster international partnerships in space exploration. As the crew prepares for training, anticipation builds for what this historic mission will bring, paving the way for humanity’s next giant leap into the cosmos.

Astronauts who will helm the first crewed moon mission in five decades were revealed on Monday, queuing up the quartet to begin training for the historic Artemis II lunar flyby that is set to take off in November 2024.
