Dogma Finally Has a 4K Blu-ray Release Date After 17 Years of Being in Limbo

By Eric November 12, 2025

**Celebrating a Classic: Dogma’s 4K Resurrection and Future Streaming Prospects**

Kevin Smith’s iconic film *Dogma*, which first graced theaters in 1999, has long been shrouded in a complicated distribution history. After its initial release, the film was acquired by Harvey and Bob Weinstein, leading to a prolonged absence from both streaming platforms and video-on-demand services. Fans of the film have been left in the lurch since the last Blu-ray edition was released way back in 2008, with no digital options available until recently. However, the tides have turned in 2024, as Iconic Events secured the theatrical rights to *Dogma*, while Smith licensed the home video rights to Lionsgate. This marked the beginning of what can only be described as a “Resurrection” tour for the film, featuring theatrical re-releases and the much-anticipated arrival of a 4K Blu-ray edition.

Pre-orders for the standard 4K edition of *Dogma* are now live on Amazon, with an official release date set for December 9, 2025. This release is particularly significant as it represents the film’s first-ever 4K upgrade, coinciding with its 25th anniversary. Fans can also look forward to a special 4K steelbook edition available directly from Lionsgate’s website. The new edition comes packed with a wealth of special features, including behind-the-scenes documentaries, audio commentaries, and a variety of trailers, ensuring that both new viewers and long-time fans will have plenty to enjoy. Notably, the previous Blu-ray version has become a collector’s item, with prices soaring to $93 on Amazon, highlighting the enduring legacy of Smith’s beloved film.

While there is currently no announced streaming release date for *Dogma*, the recent developments suggest that a digital debut could be on the horizon. Lionsgate, which does not operate its own streaming service, has partnerships with platforms like STARZ and Amazon Prime, hinting that *Dogma* could eventually find its way to these services. Additionally, with Kevin Smith teasing the possibility of *Dogma 2*, it seems likely that the original film will be made available for streaming in time for its sequel’s release. As fans eagerly await the 4K edition and the potential for digital viewing, *Dogma* continues to resonate as a significant cultural touchstone in the realm of independent cinema.

Dogma first came out back in 1999, but if you’ve ever tried to find it on streaming platforms, you’ve likely uncovered a rather complicated history. The Kevin Smith film was purchased by Harvey and Bob Weinstein a year after its initial release, and until recently, the movie has not been allowed to come to streaming or VOD. In fact, there hasn’t been any sort of release for the films since the first Blu-ray came out all the way back in 2008.
Thankfully all of that changed when Iconic Events
purchased the theatrical rights
for the film back in 2024 and Kevin Smith licensed the home video rights to Lionsgate. Since then Dogma has been having itself a
“Resurrection” tour
with theater re-releases, and most recently, a 4K Blu-ray home release.
Preorder Dogma in 4K – Out December 9
The standard 4K preorder of Dogma is now available on Amazon. Separately, Lionsgate is releasing a 4K steelbook of the film
directly from its website
. This is the first time the film has ever been released in 4K, and the 25th anniversary edition features a fresh new cover. The previous Blu-ray release is actually still available on Amazon if you’re willing to pay a whopping $93. It’s been 17 years since that Blu-ray was released and went out of print

a long time ago.

When Will Dogma Be Available to Stream?
There isn’t a streaming release date for Dogma at this point in time. As far as I know the film has never been available on any sort of streaming service or VOD platform before. With that being said, the fact that we have a release date for the 4K physical edition means that it will likely come to streaming
eventually
. Lionsgate doesn’t have its own streaming service, but it does have a deal with both STARZ and Amazon Prime.
Kevin Smith has also stated that he’s
already working on Dogma 2
, and we’d expect the film to come to a streaming service sometime before that happens at the very least. With a 4K release date of December 2025, you can likely expect Dogma to come to VOD platforms sometime shortly after.
