WA windsurfer escapes with bitten board after great white shark encounter at popular surf spot
In a harrowing encounter off the coast of Western Australia, windsurfer Andy McDonald, 61, experienced a close brush with what is believed to be a great white shark while riding his hydrofoil board at the popular Bombie surf break near Margaret River. The incident unfolded around 5:45 PM on a Monday evening when McDonald suddenly fell into the water during his ride. In a moment of sheer panic, he found himself face-to-face with the shark, which reportedly bit his board but left him unharmed. “I fell onto the shark and was like, punching it,” McDonald recounted, highlighting the instinctive response that kicked in during the frightening encounter.
Fortunately, McDonald was not alone; a friend quickly came to his aid, helping him paddle back to shore safely. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the potential dangers that lurk in the ocean, even in areas known for their recreational activities. Despite the bite marks on his board, McDonald emerged from the ordeal with only a thrilling story to tell and a newfound respect for the ocean’s inhabitants. This encounter has reignited discussions about shark safety and awareness among surfers and beachgoers in the region, as well as the importance of understanding marine wildlife behavior. As more people flock to the waters for recreational activities, incidents like McDonald’s serve as a crucial reminder of the need for vigilance and respect for the natural world.
