To save the world’s tropical forests, learn from Brazil

By Eric November 9, 2025

In 2022, Brazil faced a staggering environmental crisis, losing more rainforest than any other country in the world, with deforestation rates reaching alarming levels. The Amazon rainforest, often referred to as the “lungs of the planet,” is critical not only for biodiversity but also for regulating the Earth’s climate. According to satellite data from Brazil’s National Institute for Space Research (INPE), approximately 13,000 square kilometers of rainforest were cleared in just one year, a figure that marks a significant increase compared to previous years. This alarming trend has raised concerns among environmentalists, scientists, and global leaders, as the Amazon plays a crucial role in absorbing carbon dioxide and supporting countless species of flora and fauna.

Despite this grim outlook, there is a glimmer of hope for the Amazon and Brazil’s environmental future. The recent election of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has sparked renewed optimism regarding conservation efforts. Lula has pledged to combat deforestation aggressively and restore environmental protections that were rolled back in previous years. His administration aims to implement stricter regulations on land use, promote sustainable agricultural practices, and strengthen the enforcement of laws against illegal logging and land grabbing. Additionally, Lula’s government is committed to engaging indigenous communities in conservation efforts, recognizing their crucial role in protecting the rainforest and their traditional knowledge of sustainable land management.

International support also plays a vital role in Brazil’s fight against deforestation. Global initiatives aiming to finance conservation projects and promote sustainable development are gaining momentum, with countries and organizations willing to invest in preserving the Amazon. For instance, the Amazon Fund, which supports projects aimed at reducing deforestation, has received renewed attention and funding commitments from international partners. With these combined efforts from the Brazilian government, indigenous communities, and the global community, there is hope that Brazil can turn the tide on deforestation and protect the invaluable resources of the Amazon rainforest for future generations.

Last year it lost more rainforest than any other country. Yet there is hope
