Mother’s Day Cards

By Eric November 9, 2025

Mother’s Day in the United States has a rich and evolving history that dates back to the late 19th century. Its origins can be traced to 1870 when Julia Ward Howe, a prominent abolitionist and suffragist, penned the “Mother’s Day Proclamation.” In this powerful call to action, Howe urged mothers to unite and advocate for peace, famously declaring that women should rise against the horrors of war. This early iteration of Mother’s Day was rooted in a desire for social change, reflecting the tumultuous times of the post-Civil War era. Howe’s vision was not just about honoring mothers but also about mobilizing them to foster global peace and prevent the devastation of war from affecting future generations.

However, it wasn’t until 1912 that the modern celebration of Mother’s Day began to take shape, primarily through the efforts of Anna Jarvis, who campaigned for a special day to honor mothers. Jarvis, inspired by her own mother’s work in promoting health and wellness, organized the first official Mother’s Day celebration in West Virginia in 1908. By 1914, her tireless advocacy paid off when President Woodrow Wilson signed a proclamation making the second Sunday in May a national holiday dedicated to mothers. This marked a significant shift from the early activism associated with the day to a more commercialized and sentimental celebration of motherhood. Jarvis envisioned a day filled with personal, heartfelt gestures rather than the mass-produced gifts and cards that would soon dominate the holiday.

Today, Mother’s Day is celebrated across the United States with a blend of personal and commercial traditions. Families often gather to express their love and appreciation for mothers through gifts, cards, and special outings. The holiday has become synonymous with floral arrangements, particularly carnations, which were originally chosen by Jarvis to symbolize the day. Despite its commercialization, the essence of Mother’s Day remains rooted in the recognition of maternal figures and their contributions to society. The evolution of this holiday reflects broader societal changes, emphasizing the importance of family, love, and gratitude while also serving as a reminder of the ongoing need for social activism that Howe envisioned over a century ago.

The history of American Mother’s Day can be traced to 1870 when Julia Ward Howe (author of the Battle Hymn of the Republic) called upon mothers to put an end to war. But it wasn’t until 1912 that West Virginia […]
