Pornhub says UK visitors down 77% since age checks came in

By Eric November 7, 2025

In a recent analysis shared with BBC News, a prominent cybersecurity firm has raised concerns about the increasing number of individuals accessing riskier websites, suggesting that the trend may be linked to the growing use of Virtual Private Networks (VPNs). VPNs, which allow users to mask their IP addresses and encrypt their internet traffic, have surged in popularity as people seek to enhance their online privacy and security. This rise in VPN usage could be enabling users to bypass geographic restrictions and access sites that may harbor malware or other security threats, thereby increasing their exposure to potential online dangers.

The cybersecurity firm noted a significant uptick in traffic to websites typically associated with higher risks, such as those offering pirated content or unregulated gambling platforms. While VPNs can provide a layer of anonymity, they might also embolden users to engage in riskier online behavior, believing they are shielded from repercussions. This phenomenon raises important questions about the balance between privacy and safety in the digital age. For instance, while VPNs can protect users from surveillance and data collection, they can also inadvertently facilitate access to harmful content, exposing users to phishing scams and data breaches.

Experts in the field emphasize the need for increased awareness regarding the potential dangers of using VPNs to access risky sites. They recommend that users educate themselves about safe browsing practices and consider the implications of their online activities. As the internet landscape continues to evolve, striking a balance between maintaining privacy and ensuring safety online remains a critical challenge. With the rise of VPNs and the corresponding increase in risky online behavior, it is essential for internet users to remain vigilant and informed to protect themselves in an increasingly complex digital environment.

The site tells BBC News it believes people are viewing riskier sites – but they may just be using VPNs.
