Millions of UK Apple users could get pay-out after court ruling

By Eric November 2, 2025

In a significant legal development, millions of app purchasers in the UK may be eligible to claim damages from Apple following a ruling by the Competition Appeal Tribunal (CAT). The tribunal has allowed a collective action lawsuit led by consumer rights advocate, Dr. Richard Lloyd, which alleges that Apple has exploited its dominant position in the app market by imposing unfair fees and restrictive practices on developers. This ruling could pave the way for an estimated 19 million iPhone users who purchased apps between October 2015 and September 2021 to seek compensation for what they believe were inflated prices due to Apple’s practices.

Dr. Lloyd’s case argues that Apple’s 30% commission on app sales and in-app purchases has resulted in higher prices for consumers, as developers have had to pass on these costs to their customers. The potential damages could amount to billions of pounds, representing a significant financial liability for the tech giant. Apple, however, has announced plans to appeal the CAT’s decision, asserting that the ruling is misguided and that it has always prioritized user privacy and security while providing a robust platform for developers. The company’s stance reflects its ongoing battle with regulatory scrutiny, particularly concerning its App Store policies which have been criticized globally for stifling competition.

This case is part of a broader trend of increasing regulatory challenges facing major technology companies. Similar lawsuits have emerged in various jurisdictions, highlighting concerns over monopolistic practices in the digital marketplace. The outcome of this case not only has the potential to impact Apple’s business model but also sets a precedent for how digital platforms operate and are held accountable in the UK and beyond. As the appeal process unfolds, consumers and industry stakeholders will be closely watching, as this ruling could significantly reshape the landscape of app purchasing and the responsibilities of tech giants toward their users and developers alike.
