Millions of UK Apple users could get pay-out after court ruling

By Eric November 1, 2025

In a significant legal development, millions of app purchasers in the UK may soon have the opportunity to claim damages from Apple, following a ruling by the Competition Appeal Tribunal. The tribunal found that Apple had engaged in anti-competitive practices by imposing unfair conditions on app developers, particularly through its App Store policies. This ruling stems from a class-action lawsuit led by consumer rights advocate, Dr. Richard Lloyd, who argued that Apple’s practices inflated app prices and stifled competition. The case could potentially affect around 19 million consumers who purchased apps or in-app purchases from the App Store between October 2015 and September 2021, with claims amounting to an estimated £1.5 billion.

Apple, however, has indicated its intention to appeal the tribunal’s decision, asserting that its App Store policies are designed to foster innovation and provide a safe environment for users and developers alike. The company maintains that the ruling misrepresents its business practices and the competitive landscape of the app market. This legal battle highlights the ongoing scrutiny faced by major tech companies regarding their market dominance and the implications for consumers. It also reflects a broader trend in the tech industry, where regulatory bodies are increasingly challenging the practices of large corporations to ensure fair competition and protect consumer rights. As the appeal process unfolds, the outcome will not only impact Apple’s business model but could also set a precedent for how app marketplaces operate in the future, potentially reshaping the digital economy in the UK and beyond.

This case exemplifies the growing tensions between tech giants and regulatory authorities, as consumers and advocates push for greater accountability and transparency in the digital marketplace. With the potential for millions of consumers to reclaim lost funds, the stakes are high for both Apple and the broader tech ecosystem. As the legal proceedings continue, it will be crucial for consumers to stay informed about their rights and the implications of this landmark case.
