Millions of UK Apple users could get pay-out after court ruling

By Eric October 29, 2025

In a significant legal development, millions of app purchasers in the UK may soon be eligible to claim damages from Apple, following a ruling by the Competition Appeal Tribunal (CAT). This ruling stems from a class-action lawsuit led by consumer rights advocate Mark McGowan, who argued that Apple’s App Store practices were anti-competitive and resulted in inflated app prices. The case, which has been closely watched, could potentially see Apple facing claims from millions of UK consumers who have purchased apps since 2015. The tribunal’s decision to allow the lawsuit to proceed is a landmark moment in the ongoing scrutiny of tech giants and their market practices.

The crux of the lawsuit is Apple’s alleged monopolistic control over app distribution on its devices, which McGowan claims has led to higher prices for consumers. The CAT found sufficient grounds for the claims, stating that Apple’s practices may have caused consumers to pay up to £1.5 billion more for apps than they would have in a competitive market. This ruling could pave the way for a collective compensation scheme, allowing affected consumers to claim damages potentially amounting to hundreds of pounds each. In response, Apple has announced its intention to appeal the decision, asserting that the claims are unfounded and that its App Store policies are designed to protect users and foster innovation.

This case highlights the growing scrutiny of big tech companies and their market influence, particularly in the wake of increasing calls for regulation and fair competition in the digital economy. Similar legal challenges have emerged globally, as governments and consumer advocates seek to hold tech giants accountable for their market practices. The outcome of this case could not only impact Apple but also set a precedent for how digital marketplaces operate in the future. As consumers await further developments, this situation underscores the ongoing debate about consumer rights and the responsibilities of major technology companies in a rapidly evolving digital landscape.
