Could aluminium become the packaging ‘champion’?

By Eric October 28, 2025

In the evolving landscape of sustainable packaging, aluminium has emerged as a strong candidate for wider adoption, particularly among packaging firms advocating for its environmental benefits. Aluminium is highly recyclable, with the ability to be remelted and reused indefinitely without losing quality, making it a more sustainable option compared to traditional plastic materials. Industry experts argue that increasing the use of aluminium in packaging could significantly reduce the carbon footprint associated with production and waste management, as it requires less energy to recycle than to create new products from raw materials. For instance, the recycling process of aluminium uses about 95% less energy than producing new aluminium from bauxite ore, highlighting its potential as a more eco-friendly alternative.

However, despite these advantages, the widespread adoption of aluminium in packaging is hindered by cost concerns. The initial investment for aluminium packaging can be significantly higher than that for plastic options, which poses a barrier for many companies, especially small to medium-sized enterprises. Additionally, fluctuations in aluminium prices due to market demand and supply chain issues can make it a less predictable option for manufacturers. Some firms are exploring innovative solutions to mitigate these costs, such as investing in advanced recycling technologies or developing hybrid packaging solutions that combine aluminium with other materials to balance cost and sustainability. For example, beverage companies are increasingly looking at aluminium cans as a sustainable alternative to plastic bottles, but the price differential remains a critical factor in decision-making processes.

As consumer awareness about environmental issues continues to grow, there is a pressing need for the packaging industry to adapt and innovate. Many companies are starting to prioritize sustainable practices, and as a result, the demand for recyclable materials like aluminium is expected to rise. However, for aluminium to become a mainstream packaging solution, stakeholders across the supply chain must collaborate to address cost barriers and invest in infrastructure that supports recycling and reuse. The future of packaging may very well hinge on the industry’s ability to balance sustainability with economic viability, and aluminium stands at the forefront of this critical transition.
