Celtic replace ‘divisive’ Rodgers with former boss O’Neill

By Eric October 28, 2025

In a surprising turn of events, Brendan Rodgers has officially resigned as the manager of Celtic Football Club, a decision that has sent shockwaves through the football community. This resignation comes amid serious accusations from Dermot Desmond, the club’s majority shareholder, who has publicly criticized Rodgers for exhibiting “divisive, misleading, and self-serving” behavior during his tenure. Desmond’s comments suggest a deep rift between the manager and the club’s leadership, raising questions about the direction Celtic was heading under Rodgers’ guidance. His departure marks a significant moment for the club, which has experienced a turbulent period in recent seasons, despite previous successes under his management.

Rodgers, who had two successful spells with Celtic, initially returned to the club in 2019 after leaving Leicester City. During his first stint, he led Celtic to an impressive treble-treble, winning three consecutive Scottish Premiership titles and multiple domestic cups. However, his second term has been marred by inconsistency and a growing disconnect with the club’s fanbase. The culmination of these issues appears to have led to his resignation, which was announced shortly after Desmond’s critical remarks. In a bid to stabilize the situation and restore confidence among supporters, Celtic has appointed former manager Martin O’Neill as his successor. O’Neill, who previously led the team to great heights in the early 2000s, brings a wealth of experience and a deep understanding of the club’s culture, which may be crucial in navigating the challenges ahead.

As Celtic embarks on this new chapter under O’Neill’s leadership, the focus will be on rebuilding the team and reconnecting with the passionate fanbase that has historically been the backbone of the club. O’Neill’s previous success with Celtic, including a UEFA Cup final appearance, sets a high bar for expectations. The club is at a crossroads, and the leadership changes signal a commitment to restoring Celtic’s status as a dominant force in Scottish football. Fans will be watching closely to see how O’Neill’s appointment will influence the team’s performance and morale in the upcoming season, as they aim to reclaim their position at the top of the league and reestablish their legacy in European competitions.
