Can the plastic recycling industry be saved?

By Eric October 27, 2025

In recent years, the plastic recycling industry in Europe has faced significant challenges, leading to the closure of numerous recycling plants across the continent. The crux of the issue lies in the struggle to establish a viable business model that can sustain operations amidst fluctuating market demands and rising operational costs. Many recycling facilities are finding it increasingly difficult to compete with the low prices of virgin plastic, which has been exacerbated by geopolitical tensions and supply chain disruptions. As a result, these plants, which were once seen as critical components of a circular economy, are now shutting down or scaling back operations, raising concerns about waste management and environmental sustainability.

The situation is further complicated by the evolving regulatory landscape in Europe. While the EU has implemented ambitious policies aimed at reducing plastic waste and promoting recycling, such as the European Green Deal and the Circular Economy Action Plan, the practicalities of these initiatives have not translated into economic viability for many recycling operations. For instance, the demand for recycled plastics has not kept pace with the increasing production of single-use plastics, leading to an oversupply of recycled materials that cannot be sold profitably. Additionally, the lack of standardization in recycling processes and the varying quality of recycled materials make it challenging for recyclers to attract buyers, further complicating their business models.

Examples of this trend can be seen in countries such as Germany and France, where several recycling plants have been forced to close their doors in recent months. The closures not only impact local economies and job markets but also threaten to undermine the EU’s broader environmental goals. With plastic waste continuing to accumulate, the reliance on landfills and incineration is likely to increase, counteracting efforts to reduce plastic pollution. As Europe grapples with these challenges, there is a pressing need for innovative solutions and collaborative approaches that can help revitalize the recycling industry, ensuring that it can play a pivotal role in the transition towards a sustainable and circular economy.
